Outings: Useful information
Gorlero Avenue: It is the main pathway to the beach. Its chief spots are Artigas Square and El Mercado de los Artesanos (“The Craftsmen’s Market”). Moreover, different shopping centres, stores of the most important brand names, restaurants, cinemas, clubs and casinos can also be found.
Casa Pueblo: This house is universally considered as an inhabitable sculpture, created by the plastic artist Carlos Páez Vilaró. The creation of its original architecture took 36 years. In addition, Casa Pueblo is famed for its incredible sunsets which can be enjoyed from its different rooms. It also serves as a permanent art exhibition.
The lighthouse: Fully built with European materials and with its more than 130 feet high and, this lighthouse has been guiding sailors for over 150 years.

Gorriti Island: This small island of scarcely 50 acres, almost entirely covered by pine trees, has two beaches and a natural harbour to lodge water sports lovers.
Los Lobos Island (“Island of Seals”): This island is twice as big as Gorriti Island and it is inhabited by the most important pod of seals in South America. It is said that Juan Díaz de Solís and his men went ashore there to hunt down some seals, which constituted their only food in their journey back to Spain.
La Barra de Maldonado: By the beginning of 1940, La Barra de Maldonado was merely a fishermen town, where summer villas were built. In time, it became the exclusive summer resort it currently is, with its select beaches such as Bikini, Manantiales, Montoya and El Tesoro. Moreover, we can find the Museo del Mar (“the Sea Museum”), with an extensive collection of local sea fauna specimens as well as species from all over the world, among which we can appreciate different kinds of sea conchs, hedgehogs, turtle shells, whale skeletons, etc. |
